Discipline

This page provides information to coaches and team managers about discipline issues and procedures for game suspensions.

It is very important that coaches follow the proper procedures for dealing with player and team official suspensions.

** In all cases, you must notify the CMHA DIscipline Managers of any event. They are here to help **

NOTE - if a player is suspended for a game, they are not allowed on the bench while they are suspended. They are to sit in the stands.

Procedure for Handling Suspensions / Game Misconducts

Note that ALL of the following must be reported to the CMHA discipline managers:

  • misconducts
  • game misconducts,
  • gross misconducts
  • match penalties

must be reported to the Discipline Managers by faxing the game sheet to 613-249-7014 within 24 hours.

Scanning and e-mailing the game sheets is also acceptable.  The typical infractions include (but are not limited to)

  • major penalties,
  • fighting,
  • checking from behind,
  • head checking,
  • abuse of officials
  • unsportsman like conduct.

Referee's typically sign off on all game sheets and indicate game misconducts with a GM followed by a number.  (For example, GM30.)

We have had cases where referee's have not made such notations on the game sheet and, as a result, there was confusion whether there was a GM issued.

If you are not sure if a suspension has been issued:

  • During the game - call the referee to the bench and ask for clarification.
  • After the game - have your team manager visit the referee dressing room after the game and request clarification. Ensure the game sheet has the GMxx marking.

Remember, you are asking for a clarification on the infraction, not the suspension. The suspension is determined by the CMHA discipline managers after the gamesheet has been faxed.

This is why the game sheet must be faxed within 24 hours OR before your next game if it occurs in less than 24 hours. Allowing a suspended player to play in the next game results in a 5 game suspension to the coach.

We understand that this is not always possible.  If you cannot clarify with the referee, contact the CMHA discipline managers at 613-858-2890.  Leave a message if no one answers and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

A good rule of thumb is that if your player received a major penalty , he will likely get a game misconduct.

Should your player receive a suspension, we require confirmation that he has served the suspension.  Please ensure that the players name is listed in the suspension box of the game sheet reflecting that the suspension has been served.  Once served, fax the game sheet to us. Should you have any questions or concerns. please feel free to contact our Discipline managers.

Suspensions - Exhibition Games, Regular Season Games & Tournaments

When a player is suspended, they must sit out the next "meaningful game". If its a two game suspension, then the next two meaningful games etc..

The following games qualify as 'meaningful':

  • regular season / playoff game.
  • tournament games (only if suspension called during that tournament)

Exhibition games DO NOT COUNT as meaningful games.

The following scnearios cover various situations that can occur:

QUESTION #1- You play a regular season game on Wednesday night and your player gets a one game suspension. That Friday, your team leaves for a tournament. Can the suspended player participate in that tournament?

ANSWER #1 - The player must serve his one game suspension at the tournament. So he would site out game #1. It is vital that the tournament gamesheet indicate that the player served the suspension (1 of 1). You must fax the tournament gamesheet to the CMHA Discipline managers as proof the suspension was served.

QUESTION #2 - You are at a tournament. In Game #1, your player gets a two game suspension. Does he serve the suspension at the tournament OR does he serve it at back home in our regular season games?

ANSWER #2 - The player would serve the suspension at the tournament. So in this case, he would not play in tournament game #2 nor game #3, but would be allowed to play in the tournament quarter final game, assuming your team made it that far. If it was a two game tournament (no 3rd game), then the player would sit tournament game #2 and sit the next reason season game back home.

Remember to verify that the tournament gamesheets are filled in correctly indicating that your child served the suspension at the tournament. Please fax these tournament gamesheets to the CMHA Discipline Managers.

QUESTION #3 - One of my players is affiliated to a Junior Grads team or an "A" House League Team. During that game, he got a suspension. Where does he serve that suspension?

ANSWER #3 - The affiliated player would serve that suspension with his 'home team', not his affiliated team. That player is not allowed to play another game with the affiliated team until the suspension is served on his home team.

Suspensions - Out-of-District Tournaments

If you are playing in a tournament out of town and your player gets suspended, you need to confirm the number of games the player is suspended. Do not assume it is the same number of games as at home.

For example, the number of games a player is suspended for a game misconduct may be double if its called in a Southern Ontario tournament, than in an Ottawa tournament.

You should contact the CMHA Discipline managers immediately if you receive a suspension at an out of town tournament. Their phone numbers are accessible via Blackberry / Smart phone at:

If you are going to a Discipline Hearing - bring the gamesheet !!

If you are going to a Discipline hearing, it is important to bring the gamesheet for the game being discussed.

This means trouble!

Minors - 2 minutes

Examples: Tripping, interference, roughing and hooking.

Generally stay in the penalty box until the other team scores, unless its a coindental penalty

Majors - 5 minutes

Examples: fighting, spearing.

Player stays in the box for the full 5 minutes.

Match Penalty

A match penalty results in the immediate ejection from the game for the violating player. The team is short handed for a total of five minutes, regardless of how many times the opposing team scores. At the conclusion of the five minutes, the team may replace the ejected player with a player on the ice. In addition, 10 minutes is charged to the player's penalty minutes total for a match penalty.

Misconducts - 10 min

Player sits in the box for the full 10 minutes. No power play is awarded to the other team.

Game Misconducts

A game misconduct results in immediate ejection from the game for the violating player with the possibility of a suspension. Infractions that warrant a game misconduct include kneeing with the intent to injure or a brutal cross-check to the head among others. Again, the offending team is not short handed.

Gross Misconducts

A referee may also call a gross misconduct on a player, coach or team official. Gross misconducts are called for severely inappropriate behavior such as pulling hair during a fight or biting. This penalty results in ejection from the game, and a minimum 3 game suspension..
