Feb 3, 2006 - Bringing Two Nations Together, One Face-off at a Time
Novice B players vs. Midstate New York Select players? Sounds a bit unbalanced, doesn’t it? In perfect balance was the camaraderie, development of friendships and a passion for the game. The Cumberland Blazers, coached by Luciano Cavaliere, upheld the spirit of the Friendship Games by giving it everything they had despite the skilled play of the American youngsters while in Syracuse, NY. On February 3, our own Blazers were graciously hosted to round one of the series, with two games being played at the Coca Cola Coliseum in Syracuse. A warm and hospitable reception followed, bringing these two teams and their families together in a jovial, festive environment, complete with a few rounds of mini-stick hockey play; the room laden with Canadian and American flags. The 7 and 8 year old players exchanged T-shirts and gifts to cap off this memorable event. The two nations were brought together for several more puck drops when the Cumberland Blazers welcomed the Syracuse Mid-State team to Ottawa February 11 and 12. In ceremonial fashion, the youngsters switched jerseys, and in some cases even wore mismatched hockey socks, to mix up and even-out the teams for round two of the series. Mid-State and Cumberland teams combined to entertain the fans with truly exciting hockey, Blazers/Midstate 1 vs Blazers/Midstate 2. Everyone wins, more post-game festivities, flags flying, gift exchanges and friendship building. The Blazers and Mid-State teams brought two nations together with sportsmanship, fair-play and tons of fun!

Dec. 10, 2005 - Novice B5 Bulldogs Score for the Cumberland Resource Centre Below are two photos from the Bulldogs (Novice B5) team Christmas party. This year our team decided to do something different. Our volunteer party planners decided to take inspiration from the recent Walmart commercials depicting a hockey coach and his team purchasing toys to donate to local charities. Our team did the same! We have called it "Bulldogs Score for the Cumberland Resource Centre". On Saturday, December 10th, our 4 coaches took the team to Walmart. Each family donated a minimun of $5 per player and the coaches and kids went shopping. They purchased several wonderful toys and all our coaches survived the experience of shopping with 4 kids each! We even got a photo with Walmart's Store Manager who generously gave us a $25 gift card to use towards our purchases! Afterwards the team met at the Tenth Line Piazza for a pizza party sponsored by Precision Automotive to celebrate and show-off the purchases. We put all the toys in a big box and sent it off to the Cumberland Resource Centre. It was a great day and the kids really had fun. The Bulldogs celebrated the holiday season with some real 'team spirit'. Cumberland Resource Centre web site http://www.crcorleans-cumberland.ca
