09-DEC-2006: Cumberland "Stars" 5yrs old IP team Help Out Ottawa Food Bank
The CMHA is fortunate to have an eager group of 5 year olds playing their first year of hockey in the Initiation Program. These youngsters on the Cumberland Stars IP team have patiently been going through the drills, practicing skating, handling the puck, handling their sticks and generally getting accustomed to the equipment.
On Saturday December 9, the Cumberland Stars took to the ice in an authentic game of 5 on 5, rotating positions and goal-keeping with the trusty help of their on-ice coaches. Head Coach Luciano Cavaliere felt they really enjoyed the scrimmage, pitting team black against team white with rotating shifts with a running clock. The winner of the game? Why the Ottawa Food Bank, of course. The group of 5 year old Stars joined their team and their families for a Christmas celebration at a local community centre following the "real game". In lieu of gifts for each other, it was agreed unanimously by the group to spend $10 each on food for the Ottawa food bank. One of the team managers, Julie Pecoskie, delivered the collection of non-perishable items, that is 5 boxloads, and helped fill the OC Transpo bus dedicated for this purpose. It was a great contribution made by a great bunch of youngsters and their families. Now that's teamwork.
