2008-APR-06: Peewee B4 "Cougars" Win GHA Championship
Congratulations to Cumberland Peewee B4 (COUGARS) Head Coach Paul Clarke for winning the GHA house league B2 Championship. After boasting a 2-0-1 record in the quarter finals, the COUGARS faced a very determined Metcalfe Jets (B1) team in the semi-final. With the COUGARS leading 2-0 heading into the 3 rd period, Metcalfe came out strong and potted an early goal. With the score 2-1 and with minutes remaining in the 3 rd , Metcalfe pulled their goalie and held the COUGARS in their end for what seemed to be an eternity. Finally, the COUGARS managed to clear the zone and get a much needed line change. With less than 60 seconds remaining, Metcalfe orchestrated a well rehearsed breakout; however a costly turnover in the neutral zone sealed their fate. The COUGARS scored an empty net goal solidifying a trip to the finals. The stage was set. The COUGARS were matched against a very strong Leitrim Hawks team, who they played in the quarter finals and tied 1-1. Even after their year-end party, a 2 hour skills competition at Ray Friel the night before, and with puck drop scheduled for 9:00 am, the COUGARS were still roaring to go. With tight defence, a speedy offence, and solid netminding, the Hawks were no match for the mighty Cumberland COUGARS, who were victorious 6-2. Special thanks to Gilles Marcil & Jean Landreville (assistants), Pat Grenier (trainer), Marc Brabant (manager), and of course the PARENTS. 2008-MAR-16: Novice C1 "Dragons" Finalists in South End Tournament
The Cumberland Dragons ended the round robin as the top team and faced the South End Sharks in the finals. The game was tied 2-2 in the third period and the Sharks were able to score twice and go ahead by 2. The Dragons pulled their goalie and pressed hard into the Sharks end, but were not able to score. The Dragons received a trophy for being finalists. Each Dragon will be getting this trophy for one day so they can take it to their home town, have pictures taken and have a write-up in some local newspapers. Just seeing how excited the Dragons were during this tournament makes any type of volunteering definitely worth it. Congratulations to Amaan, Kevin, Alexandre, Connor, Brandon, Noah, Leif, Cedrick, Alexis, Austin, William, Colin, Adam, Josh, team officials and parents. 2008-MAR-10: Peewee A4 "Spartans" Win Sudbury Tournament
After a long six hour drive on Friday March 7, the Cumberland Peewee A4 "Spartans" played their first tournament game at the John Jamieson Freindship Tournament. They won their game 8 0 however they noted that there were teams from around the Sudbury area which had won their games by 13 goals. The next day they won both of their games and placed first in their division by a slightly better goal for and goals against average than the second place team who had also won all their games . All the Cumberland Spartans played like a team, making great passes which led to many goals and assists by all players. The goaltending by Sam and Noah was impeccable and resulted in only two goals scored against the Spartans in the first three games . The awoke bright and early Sunday morning -even earlier due to the time change- and played the semi final game against a team from Mindemoya who had not lost a game during the round robin. It was a battle to the very end with the final score being 1-0 for Cumberland Spartans thanks to a goal from Seamus assisted by Matthew. The Cumberland Spartans were off to the finals. Coach David Zawadski did not stress the boys by telling them that they were playing the Coniston Flames who not only placed first in their division but who had not let in one goal during the tournament and had the best record of all twelve peewee teams in the tournament . The Spartans had theri work cut out for them. Captain Kody was determined and scored the first goal agains the Coniston goalie which was what led them to gain the confidence to go on to win the game. The John Jamieson Friendship Tournament is run by the Walden Minor Hockey Association and the manager for the Cumberland Spartans, Luisa Guyan, said it was one of the best tournaments their team has played in due to the fact that it was well organized and the tournament committee was extremely friendly and helpful to the out of town teams. The final game was everything you would expect when two unbeaten teams face each other. It was fast paced with lots of shots, great opportunities on both sides and the goaltending was superb. Kingston opened the scoring 6 minutes into the first period and continued to press for another. The Predators held up against the pressure and were rewarded with an excellent goal by Alexis half way through the second to even the score. Pressure seemed to mount on both sides with excellent chances on both sides right up until the final minute of the 3rd period. Kingston managed to score with 52 seconds remaining in the game. Cumberland had one last opportunity but was unable to get it by the Kingston goaltender. The final score was 3-1 since Kingston managed to put in an empty netter with 10 seconds remaining.
