The Cumberland Midget A3 Rainbow Ponies finished their successful season in style by capturing the Roger's House Year End Tournament on Sunday April 18, 2010.

The Ponies started strong with a convincing 2-0 victory over Lachute, on the strength of Nick's shutout performance. Game two saw a tape-to-tape pass from Derek to send Brytan in on a breakaway, to seal the victory in 3 on 3 overtime.

In the semi-finals, the Ponies defeated a strong South End team 3-2 thanks to solid work from the defence and tallies from Maxime, Liam and Derek. Tyler was the hero in the championship game, scoring the only goal the Ponies would need to preserve Zach's shutout and take home the hardware.

The Ponies' players and staff were well supported by a boisterous herd of family and friends in the stands.

2010-03-16: Lightning Strikes Twice", Cumberland Peewee A3 wins March Break Tournament in PICTON!

Coming off a recently successful 3rd place Bronze Medal performance at the Bell Capital Cup, the Cumberland Lightning stuck again!  This time, they bolted into Picton to win the Prince Edward County 2010 March Break House League Tournament and claimed the “A” Division championship.

The Lightning got off to a quick start winning their opening game 7-2, then moved on to outscore their opponents by a 29-6 margin in their opening 3 games of the round robin.

Finishing 1st in their division, the Lightning achieved a much deserved bye into the semi-finals to face the top team from Whitby.  On day two, the pressure intensified and the games became much more competitive having fans sitting on the edge of their seats.  For most of the first two periods, the Lightning and Wildcats were in a sea saw battle up and down the ice trading scoring chances until the Lightning broke the deadlock midway into the second.  In the 3rd, the Lighting took control of the game never looking back and netted two more on their way to a 3-0 victory.  The win moved Cumberland into the finals against their arch rivals from Russell.  The Lightning as they did all tournament long opened the scoring against the Warriors mid-way through the game.  Russell then tied it up late in the second to make it a battle down the stretch.  After solid goal tending from both Cumberland net minders and continued determination by the team, the Lightning continued to pressure Russell and finally broke the tie with just over 4 minutes to play.  With solid defence the rest of the way, Cumberland held on and prevailed with a 2-1 margin of victory to secure the “A” Division Championship.

The team played with much poise and confidence and kept their cool when they were challenged with much adversity, especially in their final two games against two top calibre teams.  All players should be extremely proud of their individual and team accomplishments this year as their hard work and positive attitude is responsible for this great result.  As for the Lightning fans, they’ve continued to be loud and boisterous throughout the season and tournament giving the “Lightning” the boost they needed to come out on top and made the kids feel like they were playing in their home rink.  Way to go parents!  Congratulations to all members of the coaching staff and the support team who have worked hard with the kids all season long and making them feel like great things can happen through teamwork!

Congratulations to Head Coach Luc Landry and the Cumberland Peewee A-3 Lightning on winning a Bronze medal during the 11th Annual Bell Capital Cup Tournament.

The Lightning struck quick and often in their opening two games outscoring their opponents 14-3 including a 7-3 win over North Franklin USA. As the tournament progressed, the competition became fierce and the team needed a come from behind win in game 3 to advance to the elimination round.

The Lightning would then find themselves playing another 3 games over a 24 hour stretch including a once in a lifetime opportunity of hosting a game against Iqaluit which was the highlight of the tournament. The Lightning gained the nickname “Cardiac Kids” winning the next two games in dramatic fashion by scoring in the final seconds of both games to advance to the semi-finals.

2009-12-19: Peewee B4 "Flames" Donate Gifts To Local Charity

On behalf of the Parents and Coaching staff of the Cumberland Flames, PeeWee B4 Team,  we want to highlight a valuable and memorable initiative taken by our young players, which in our minds, qualifies them in the Cumberland "Hall of Champions". A group of parents on our team organized a Christmas party for the team in early December and came up with a great idea to contribute in making this Christmas gathering much more meaningful.

In addition to having families bring their street hockey gear, food and festive spirits, we asked that every player bring an Angel tree gift that they would offer to another child (through local charities) of the same age who will not be as fortunate during this holiday season.  The response and collection of gifts from players was overwhelming.

Parents and the coaching staff took the time to explain the significant difference they were making in the life of another child in the community which was less fortunate.   Coaching hockey includes teaching and reinforcing life skills to our players!! The Cumberland Flames lived a life lesson that makes them Hall of Champions and leaders in our community.   Our players were very proud of being able to contribute in such a manner.

The team has successfully reached it’s goal,  but the hope is that we are able to influence other teams in the community to do the same throughout the years.   The following is a testimonial from one of the parents on the team:

The Cumberland Flames party was the first time in 10 years that we have seen our boys be given the opportunity to recognize that they are part of something very special and that as part of this membership, they can make a difference in the life of another child. There are so many children who, for a variety of reasons, do not have the opportunity to be part of a team sport and experience life as our boys do. It was wonderful to see each boy bring a gift and very selflessly drop it in the box for someone else, knowing that they would not be receiving a gift in return.”

The Wolves scored two quick goals on Coniston in the first period. Coniston fought back, but in the end, the Wolves prevailed and won the championship game 5-3.

2009-11-16: Midget A5"Warriors" Win West Nipissing Sting Tournament

The Cumberland A5 Warriors decided to put the school PD day to good use and travelled north to Sturgeon Falls on Friday the 13th. Our first game, after the 5 hour drive was at 9pm where we came through with a convincing 6 - 0 win over the Porcupine Rebels after out shooting them 28/8.

Saturday saw us start off with a dominating 10 - 0 win over West Nipissing A&W. Shots were 23/9 in our favour. Our final Round Robin game came at 8pm that evening where we chalked up another "W" against North Bay P&G Auto with a score of 9-1, out shooting the opposition 40/2.

Our record got us a buy into the final where we met the Porcupine Rebels again who were "gunning" for us. We squeaked by to win the Championship with a nerve-racking 1-0 victory, fighting off a 5 on 3 power play in the dying minutes of the game. We out shot the Rebels 28/8. All in all it was a great tournament, well refereed, and organized.
