Sanctioned Tournaments Any tournament you register for must be sanctioned by a Hockey Canada approved association. For example, all tournaments held in the Ottawa area MUST be sanctioned by the Ottawa District Minor Association (ODMHA). To see their list of sanctioned tournaments, visit http://www.odmha.on.ca/ Note that if your team entered a tournament that is not officially sanctioned:
Entering Tournaments with Body Contact
Regardless of what the coaches/parents/players decide, you're not allowed to enter these tournaments. Our insurance does not cover teams entered into body contact tournaments. Entering 'Select Tournaments' Cumberland House League teams are permitted to enter tournaments that allow 'Select Teams' to play. These are in Toronto. However, these tournaments must be House League only, non-competitive, non-body checking tournaments.
Travel Permit Travel permits are required for a CMHA team to play outside the ODMHA boundaries. Steps:

Bell Capital Cup Historically, the tournament has only offered non-contact play for the Atom division. Therefore, your child can only participate in the tournament during the 2 years they are in Atom. This tournament uses a very elaborate online registration system. Initially, you send in a cheque, registration form and a roster. Later you'll receive a username and password to use on their online system. It is important that you carefully follow their instructions in using their online registration. You must upload your team official, player information, team photo and regular season game scores. Click on the image below to see a screen shot of the online registration system:
All Star Game goalie and coaches - Your team may be required to supply either a goalie, coach or trainer for the all-star game. If this is the case, you'll see the option appear in your team's all-star selection form. Click HERE to see an example. You must also bring gamesheets when you show up for your first game. Again, carefully read all Bell Cup emails and their rules/regulations. Tournaments During the GHA League Playoffs Note that GHA playoff games (round robin, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals) can not be rescheduled, even if you are in a tournament. This rule was implemented for the 2007 playoffs. Example: For the 2007 playoffs, the schedule is shown below. Playoff games are from March 19 to April 15th.
Kingston Kids-4-Kids Tournament Website (http://www.whatsonkingston.com/sports/kidsforkids/index.html) - The Kingston Kids-4-Kids charity hockey tournament is a very large tournament and has been attended by many Cumberland teams over the years. It offers Novice to Midget divisions at A,B and C levels. It is very organized. One piece of advice is to book your hotel in early October, otherwise, you might be staying in Belleville! Keep in mind is that this tournament is usually held right before our house league playoffs start or during the playoffs. It depends one year to the next. Therefore, if you are going to the Kids-4-Kids tournament, it is important that you make up any league games you've missed before they were scheduled. For example in the 2006, the diagram on the left shows the situation that will exist for some teams. The problem is that the tournament schedule overlaps with the league playoff round-robin schedule. GHA rules prohibit rescheduling of GHA round robin and playoff games (new for 2006-2007). This means that depending on the dates, you might play a Kids-4-Kids game in Kingston at 9am and then have to drive back to Ottawa for a playoff game at 2pm !! Remember that if you are registered for a 3 game tournament, you must play all 3 games or else the coach will get suspended by the league. For example, lets say you lose the first two games of the tournament. You think that there is no point playing the 3rd game, so you decide to leave and return home in time to play your league round robin game. In this case, the coach will face disciplinary action for not playing the 3rd tournament game. If you need to reschedule a game and are having trouble obtaining ice, contact your convenor since the CMHA may have extra ice available for you. This is first come first serve. If you are having trouble rescheduling the games, contact your convenor to discuss your options.
City Tournament - Ottawa Minor Hockey Tournament In Support of Roger's House
For example, the diagram on the left, it shows the 2006 league playoff schedule and tournament schedules. Since you are playing in Ottawa, it is possible to play both your tournament game and league playoff games in the same day, providing the game times don't overlap. If you are playing in the tournament on April 7,8,9 and you have a conflict with a league semi-final or final game, contact the tournament co-ordinator to see if they will accomodate you by moving your tournament game. If not, contact your convenor. If you need to reschedule a game and are having trouble obtaining ice, contact your convenor since the CMHA may have extra ice available for you. This is first come first serve. If you are having trouble rescheduling the games, contact your convenor to discuss your options.
Follow the travel permit instructions above, but use the USA travel permit. USA Tournaments that Cumberland teams have attended:
Note that if you attend a tournament in the U.S.A., it is recommended that you purchase additional insurance for the team. It is extremely cheap on provides coverage for players for on and off the ice. See McDougall Insurance for this coverage. http://www.mcdougallinsurance.ca/team_travel.php
Some Advice from Coaches / Managers Info for B and C level tournaments - A big memo to new coaches at those levels. A lot of smaller communities near the Ottawa region (IE: Pembroke, Petawawa, Renfrew, Carleton Place, Embrun, Casselman, Rockland, etc... Kingston...) don't have levels of teams (A, B or C) like we do. They have tryouts for the competitive teams and whoever does not make the team is put back in a house league pool where they spread out the talent and create house league teams. Now these teams have A, B and C players on them but they still call themselves B or C level teams. What I have noticed when we go play in their tournaments or when they come in town is that 3 or 4 "A" players dominate the game and give the Cumberland teams very little chance at success. (check out how many teams from smaller communities went far in the Bell tournament at the "B" level last year). It is important for teams to ask tournament organizers if they have different levels of house league or just one level before registing for such a tournament. NOTE: The Cumberland Tournaments (http://tournaments.cumberlandminorhockey.ca) deal with this problem by forcing "B" level teams to play at the "A" level, if they don't have an "A" team in their association. Register Early - there are a limited number of House League tournaments, even fewer out-of-town tournaments. So it is important to register as early as possible...like in October! . Keep in mind that Cumberland is a large association and some tournaments may restrict the number of CMHA teams. For example, if the CMHA has 6 Atom B teams and they all apply to an Atom B tournament with 8 spots, you can be assured that the tournament co-ordinator is not going to let all 6 CMHA teams in since we would dominate their entire tournament. They might only let in 2 CMHA teams, 2 Orleans teams, 2 Kanata teams in order to provide a variety.
