Volunteer Profiles
Minor Hockey is very dependant on a large volunteer
base. Volunteers can assist in a variety of capacities.
The Association is managed by a Board of Directors,
elected each year at an Annual General Meeting.
The roles of the CMHA Executive are defined in
the CMHA By-Laws and are described here:
Each team requires its' own set of volunteers.
Click on the following links to see the job descriptions:
Each of these volunteers are also required to attend various clinics administered by the Ottawa District Hockey Association (ODHA).
The CMHA covers the total cost of these programs for CMHA House League Volunteers

In addition to the above, many teams also divide up the Team Manager duties and have individuals in the following roles:

Coach
The Coach is ultimately responsible for all aspects of the team. They are in effect "the boss" and they choose the team manager, assistant coaches and trainers. The Coach reports directly to the convenors.

Team Manager
While the Coach looks after all 'on-ice' activites, the Team Manager looks after everything else. The Team manager is one of the most important roles on the team. Team Managers should be organized, have access to the internet/email and communicate well. The Team Manager should ensure that as many parents participate as possible with the various tasks since there are too many for one person. One suggestion is to have a tournament co-ordinator to look after tournament/hotel bookings, a social director to organize all parties/banquets and a fundraising co-ordator to look after fundrasining. Delegation or co-managing is the key to a successful and semi-unstressful year. Duties include:
- everything off the ice

- Collects all forms from parents.
- practice and game schedule to parents.
- plans and participates in all off-ice activities (ie: meetings, meals, outdoor events)

- creates and coordinates phone committee
- opens and closes locker room
- available and prepared to summon help/ambulance
- prepares/inputs to newsletters
- collects and orders socks, name bars, pictures. (NOTE - photoday organized by CMHA, managers must distribute forms).
- organizes time and score keepers
- assists/completes game sheets. This includes preparing game sheet stickers
- secure additional practice ice time.
- distributes and collects evaluation forms
Assistant Coaches
Assistant Coaches work on the ice during practices and behind the bench during the games. There are typically two assistant coaches. Their duties include:
- make Coaches' job more successful/enjoyable
- the puck bag and water bottles
- practices
- pre-practice explanations
- conduct warmup
- teach actively
- supervise physical conditioning
- work on individual skills/tactics
- games
- analyze action
make suggestions
-
player feedback/encouragement
-
record statistics
- liase player-to-Coach
- assist the Manager
- function as a Coaching team
- define roles and responsibilities
- be fair and consistent
- provide leadership
- mutual respect
- provide feedback/encourage suggestions
- - "We not I"
Trainer
Each team requires one trainer behind the bench during a game. It is helpful to have a couple of parents with their Trainer certification in the event that the official team trainer is unavailable.
- distribute and collect Medical Record Forms
- check and verify safety of equipment
- check and verify safety of arena, rink surface
- available and prepared to render aid
- work behind the bench during games.
- Fill out and submit Injury Report forms.
- Prepare the water bottles for each game ( or get someone to do this).
Treasurer
Teams at the Novice level and above require a Treasurer. The Treasurer should have access to a computer. They are responsible for:
- Opening a 'community bank account' for the team. Click HERE for instructions on how to open an account.
- Preparing a budget at the beginning of the year to present to parents at the initial parent's meeting. Include League fund-raising. This must be submitted to CMHA VP Administration.
- Write cheques for tournaments, team hat orders, banquets, purchasing extra ice time etc.
- Collect money from parents for team fees, chocolate bar sales and other fundraisers.
- Prepare team financial reports and distribute them to parents during the year (mid-year and end of year).
- Return all excess funds to the parents at the end of the season.
- Prepare final year end financial report. This must be submitted to the CMHA VP Administration.
- Arrange for two other parents to audit the report and ensure that all cheques and receipts are in order. (This can be done at the year end banquet).
High School Community Service Hours - click HERE for more info.
Ontario High School students must complete a minimum of 40 hours of unpaid community involvement activities before graduating from high school. Students are responsible for fulfilling this requirement on their own time, and for keeping a record of their activities on a form supplied by the school.
The CMHA has opportunites for High School students to obtain these Community Service Hours:
- Tournament Volunteer - You can help doing various duties during our Cumberland Hockey Tournament.
- Scoreboard and Gamesheet Duties - Every game, the home team must provide a scoreboard operator and gamesheet scorer. Both of these people sit rink-side. If your at the rink watching your younger brother/sister play hockey, you may as well volunteer and earn some service hours. If you would like to volunteer for this role, please contact your Team Manager directly and let them know you are interested. The season starts at the beginning of October and ends at the beginning of April.
Note that it is the responsibiliy of the student to confirm with the school that these duties are appropriate/applicable for their credit.
